Simple chemistry saving thousands of gold miners from mercury poisoning

The costs of mining gold are great. Every year, thanks to mining practices that have persisted for centuries, huge amounts of mercury pollute the atmosphere and poison hundreds of thousands of people in some of the world’s poorest countries. Simply banning the use of mercury hasn’t solved the problem, so chemists have devised simple apparatus to help to end the misery of mercury pollution.
