GUIDELINES FOR PUBLICATION
Articles suitable for publication in the journal Química Nova are those that cover the traditional fields of chemistry (analytical, inorganic, physical, organic, biochemistry and chemical engineering), as well as articles on the teaching of chemistry, the history of chemistry, science policy, etc.
Articles should conform to one of the categories below.
Original Articles (in Portuguese, English or Spanish): for communicating original research. Articles should follow the usual form of presentation, including introduction, results and discussion, experimental section, etc., as appropriate for the work at hand.
Review Articles (in Portuguese, English or Spanish): for communicating progress in a specific field of chemistry, with a critical view and the main objective of serving a readership of post-graduate students and non-specialists in the field. The editorial board of QN may occasionally invite qualified researchers to submit a review article. Authors should have published in the field they are reviewing.
Feature Articles (in Portuguese, English or Spanish): for dissemination of some aspect or field of chemistry, written from an educational perspective, aiming to serve a readership of undergraduate students, post-graduate students, non-specialists in the field, secondary school chemistry teachers, etc.
Articles on Education (in Portuguese or Spanish): for communicating work related to the teaching of chemistry.
Technical Notes (in Portuguese, English or Spanish): for communicating methods, techniques, equipment and accessories developed in the author's laboratory.
General Subjects (in Portuguese, English or Spanish): subjects of general interest for chemists, such as science policy, undergraduate and post-graduate programs, history of chemistry, etc.
PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPTS - Three complete double-spaced copies of the manuscript should be submitted, using only Microsoft Word. A disk (3 ½" size) should be submitted after acceptance of the article by the editors. The first page should have the title of the article and the name and the address of the authors. (Please, consult the last issue of the journal.) If authors have different addresses, these should follow each author's name immediately. It is recommended to group authors by address. The second page should have the title and an abstract of the article, both in English, with a maximum of 100 words, and three keywords, also in English. All of the text should be typed using upper and lower case letters.
Figures (graphs, drawings, etc.) should be of appropriate graphic quality. They should be submitted preferably as a separate file. (A figure inserted in the text is not necessarily a copy of the original file.) Figures should be scanned with high resolution (800 dpi/bitmap for lines) with extension tif and/or bmp and photographs and color drawings (300 dpi/grayscale) should have extension tif; so that they will conform to the format of the journal. Other possible extensions are cdr, doc, eps, and jpeg. If figures cannot be submitted as files on disk, hard copy drawings on tracing paper or laser printer printouts should be submitted instead, which will be photographed. Photographs should be in black and white. Schemes of chemical structures should be all of the same size, so that they can be uniformly reduced. It should be remembered that figures have to fit into one column of 8.5 cm width or into two columns of 17.5 cm total width.
Journal abbreviations should follow the practice adopted by the CA (refer to Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index, CASSI or in the following homepage: www.cas.org./sent.html). References (including footnotes) should be numbered consecutively throughout the text, in the form of superscripts. The list of references should be placed at the end of the text. Last names of authors should be given before first and middle name initials, followed by the name of the journal in italics, the year of publication in boldface, the volume number in italics and, finally, the page number. Books should be cited in an analogous manner, including the name of the editor, the location and the year of publication.
Authors should follow, as far as possible, the IUPAC recommendations, including the International System of Units. Regarding the nomenclature of compounds (organic and inorganic), there are already translations in Portuguese published in QN. Regarding symbols and terminology, if there are not yet translations, it is expected that authors make the necessary adjustments, thus gradually creating a body of norms in Portuguese.
SUBMISSION OF PAPERS- Typescripts should be addressed to:
Química Nova
Sociedade Brasileira de Química, Caixa Postal 26037
05513-970, São Paulo-SP,Brazil
It should be accompained by a letter indicating : a) the category of the article, b) the names and addresses of 3 or 4 potential referees and c) the e-mail of the corresponding author.
REVISED MANUSCRIPTS – Typescripts returned to an author for revision must be returned within three months or they will be considered withdrawn.
The editorial board of QN keeps the right to make, when necessary, minor changes to manuscripts, to adapt them to the format of the journal or turn the language clearer, naturally respecting the content of the article. Whatever the nature of the manuscript submitted, it should contain original work regarding methodology, information, interpretation or commentary. The article will be assessed by at least two referees, nominated by the editorial board.
