Dear Dr. Alves:
The American Chemical Society’s (ACS) Education
and International Activities Division is planning a Pan-American Conference
for June 29—July 3, 2000. The conference will be held in San Juan, Puerto
Rico at the University of Puerto Rico—Rio Piedras Campus. Undergraduates
from the American hemisphere will be given the opportunity to attend plenary
talks, symposia, and workshops that will be modeled after the very
successflul ACS Student Affiliates (SA) program held at each ACS national
meeting (see attachment for tentative program). The American Chemical Society
will provide round trip, economy class airfare, hotel expenses and meals
for the invited participants.
The program will begin on Thursday, June 29th.
with registration and a reception. On Friday, June 30th. , we will have
the opening ceremonies, an industrial tour, and a kick-off social. On Saturday,
we will have several symposia, plenary lectures, and career-related workshops.
The undergraduate attendees will have the opportunity to display their
research during an undergraduate research poster session on Sunday, July
2nd. In addition, representatives from graduate schools in the North and
South American hemisphere will be available during this time to discuss
their respective graduate program with the students. Symposia and workshops
are also being planned for the faculty attendees.
We are pleased to extend an invitation to
fifteen (15) countries in the American hemisphere to participate. You are
cordially invited to send eight (8) undergraduate students and two (2)
faculty members to attend this educational and exciting conference. Please
review the enclosed list of criteria. We ask that you strongly consider
this list when choosing the students and faculty that will represent your
country. You are welcomed to add more criteria that may be of importance
to you when selecting the students. We ask that you complete the selection
process by March 10, 2000. Please return the enclosed fax back form by
February 18. 2000 to let us know if your country will participate.
Due to financial constraints, the conference will be limited to a specific
number of attendees. Therefore, we kindly ask that you select no more than
eight (8) students and two (2) faculty members to attend this conference.
A similar letter has been mailed to Dr. Airton
Marques da Silva at the Brazilian Chemical Association. We ask that the
organizations work together to select the eight undergraduate students
and two faculty members that will attend the conference. Thank in you advance
for collaborating with the Brazilian Chemical Association.
We are excited about this first time event
for the American Chemical Society and hope that undergraduate students
and faculty members from your country will be able to attend and actively
participate. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact
Lairease Garrison, the Senior Staff Associate for the Student Affiliates
Program, at 202-872-6166 (phone), 202-833-7732 (fax), or via e-mail at
